Dr. Sainath joined National Institute of Health and Family welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi as a Research Fellow and obtained Ph. D in Physical Anthropology. Started career as a Research Officer in 1995 and during the course of services he had held many positions including Chief of Party, Health of the Urban Poor (HUP) Program, USAID with Population Foundation of India (PFI). He has been part of major donors ‘proposals like USAID and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
He provided technical leadership support to the state and city teams in developing and implementing evidence-based community mobilization and client outreach strategies in all major cities, including state headquarters of Uttar Pradesh.
Being Chief of Party of Health of Urban Poor program (HUP), he was responsible to demonstrate and test out urban health strategic program approaches (planning process, community engagement, convergence, addressing health determinants) through city demonstration, providing technical assistance support to central govt. states and cities towards the preparation and roll out of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM). HUP was a fairly large and flagship program of USAID with a budget portfolio of 20 million USD and was implemented in eight states, 25 cities (74, 51,267 population coverage) with 6 large programs and technical partners and 11 implementing partners.
Dr Sainath has published number of articles on urban health, food security, urban poor, climate change and integrated child health services. He also participated in National and represented India in several international conferences, workshops, seminars in Kenya, Bangladesh, Thailand, Netherland, USA, Portugal, Brazil.
He is associated with International Society for Urban Health (ISUH), New York as a board member also served as Scientific Member of the 14th International conference held at Portugal. He also served as Delhi Urban Health Policy working group, Govt. of Delhi and member of NUHM Technical Committee, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
In brief Dr Sainath is a qualified, development professional with more than 23 years of experiences in conceptualization and implementation of time bound complex, large scale urban health programme, aimed to provide policy and program support through high quality technical assistance, engaging multiple ministries, departments, stakeholders/ partners, in-depth strategic program, financial and institutional planning and management, individual and institutional leadership & capacity building initiatives, evidence based policy advocacy, guidance and operationalization support for process and outcome level performance monitoring. Having relations and strong coordination with government ministries, state govt. departments and urban local bodies, international donors, national technical institutions and international universities. A strong team player with ability to guide and mentor diverse professionals with a problem solving approach on urban health issues, policies and health system. Effective communicator with excellent negotiation skills, strong leadership and ability to work in a diverse team to achieve a common goal. Strong conceptual & analytical skill with ability to work under pressure and multi task orientation.
