Dr. Dasgupta did his Ph. D. in Environmental Economics and Forest Economy from Delhi School of Economics and Post Doctorate in Disaster Management from Heidelberg University, Germany. He also undertook research studies on Post-cyclone Situation in Bangladesh, Dhaka University, Bangladesh; Gender Perspective in Disaster Management, International Development Institute Sussex, UK & affiliated to Delhi School of Economics; and Climate Change Adaptation & Increasing Environmental Refugees; The Increasing Cost of Global Warming- University of California & Los Angeles (UCLA).
He is having more than 40 years of research based extensive experience at macro as well as field level, focusing on developing strategies and related public policies for sustainable development & food security for vulnerable areas and people. Other interest areas are community health, focusing on women and child health, environment, alternative education, micro credit, consumer & civil rights and using development initiatives for conflict resolution. Civil & human rights are key areas of interest.
Have taught Microeconomics, Statistics, Developmental Economics, Environmental Economics, Disaster Management and Climate Change as full-time faculty member & as visiting Faculty at various universities in India, Asia, Europe and USA. Have been primarily teaching environmental economics and disaster management. Have been involved with the JFK centre for Disaster Management, Harvard, USA & Kobe’s Centre for Disaster (Earthquake) Management. Have also taught at Zagreb, Serbia, Heidelberg, Germany, International Development Institute, Sussex, UK, Harvard, Stanford & UCLA, CA, USA, universities. Have been the main guide for 37 doctoral candidates in Environmental Economics & Development/ Environment related public policy issues. Having more than 150 publications (books) with a focus on forest economy, tribal health, developmental issues and related gender perspective in agriculture, forestry, fishery and disaster management, micro credit operations in Bangladesh. Also have numerous publications in various journals like the Economic & Political Weekly, Economist, Social Observer, National Geography & in various newspapers in various countries.
